It's been a while since I've read any of Tennessee Williams's plays. As I finished the last act, I realized that his was not a gossamer reputation: There is something real about that sad, strange outsider who recognizes the same qualities in his readers. It has been quoted many times before, but Chance Wayne's closing lines as he faces the punishment for his many offenses encapsulates perfectly what Williams is all about:I don't ask for your pity, but just for your understandingnot even thatno.

Sad, and Tennessee Williams is a great writer, but I was honestly bored by the premise and plot of this play. None of the characters were very compelling to me, and after what Chance did to Heavily, I really couldn't feel bad for him anymore. What a disappointment.

I didn't realise how much I enjoy this play until I read an analysis of themes and symbolism throughout the play. Turns out I had missed a lot but my general understanding of the piece was there.
